On Sunday 17 November, Sati, Tana and Jan did a two-hour course put on by New Zealand Bridge on the 5 most common things Directors get called for during the course of club brdge play.
Although our Real Bridge platform and our electronic Tablets on Thursday night mitigate our making many of these errors, like bidding or calling 'out of turn', or making an 'insufficient bid' there was some interesting learning relating to "Leading out of turn" and "Revoking" (reneging).
One thing that we can put into place straight away is that the person whose turn it is to lead places the card face-DOWN on the table until it is agreed by partner that they play it.
Another was that dummy should never signal a revoke - but can say to partner "no more spades partner?" if they trump that suit, for example. A revoke can be signalled by dummy at end of game. If there is a revoke, the 'reluctant informal director' should be called. We need the practice!
The last one I'll mention is dummy should never indicate to partner which hand they are in by tapping the table - but can say "Your hand partner" or "Table partner" as they see their partner about to play a card.
A card is deemed to be played when it is taken out of the hand!!
We do have a lot of flow diagrams explaining each of the things that can occur which we will put up on the Resources page of the website in the near-future for those who are interested.
